Image: Khan: I'm going to pick the right fights and win more world titlesBy William Mackay: Once again claiming he’s going to come back stronger from his disastrous 4th round knockout loss to WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia, Amir Khan is planning on carefully picking his opponents while slowly building up to challenge for future titles in the sport. Khan says he’s not washed up, but we’ll have to see about that because he’s lost his last two fights and can no longer afford to lose anymore.

Khan said to Sky Sports News “I know I will come back stronger. Look at Muhammad Ali the way he came back; Mike Tyson the way he came back from getting beat. All the best get beat. It’s how you come back from it, and I know I am one of these fighters that will come back stronger…I’m going to pick the right fights and slowly work my way again to win world titles.”

Khan went on to question the wisdom of him flying to the Philippines to train with Freddie Roach and then fly all the way back. Khan feels that this didn’t help him. He also thinks he made a mistake of having two camps back to back after his rematch with Lamont Peterson was wiped out from a positive drug test for Peterson while Khan was in training for their rematch. Khan went from that training camp, which was nearly finished, to another long training camp for the Garcia fight.

It’s unclear right now whether Khan will stick with Roach. Sky mentioned that there may be some changes in that area due to Roach spending so much time with other fighters such as Manny Pacquiao. That would make a lot of sense for Khan, because he needs a trainer that will be there for him and who can devote a lot of time on trying to fix his areas of weakness. Khan definitely needs someone that he listens to and follows their instructions during fights, because Khan clearly was marching by the beat of his own drum in the Garcia fight, failing to follow the instructions given to him by Roach. It might take a more assertive trainer that could shock Khan into following his instructions by getting in his face and screaming at him when Khan fails to do what he says.

As for Khan saying he’s going to pick the right fights to win more titles, this sounds like Khan is going to be put in soft fights and perhaps aimed eventually at the weakest link among the light welterweight champions if Khan chooses to stay at this weight for more than a fight or two.
