Image: Khan: I still haven't hit my peak yetBy Scott Gilfoid: It’s clear that former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan isn’t going to be retiring yet, and nor will he be moving up in weight to the welterweight division like he’d been talking about for months now. Khan plans on staying at light welterweight and trying to beat the top fighters before moving up in weight at some point.

Khan said to the Dailymail.co.uk “I’m 25. I still I’ve not hit my peak yet and I still have a long, long way to go.”

It’s interesting that Khan is still using the line that he’s not reached his peak yet despite having lost his last two fights. For some fighters they’re peak came earlier their career and they just don’t know it yet. I think Khan might be one of those fighters. He had a peak between 2009 to 2011. Things have been going downhill for Khan since December 2011 in losing to Lamont Peterson and now continuing to lose in his last fight against Danny Garcia.

Khan also said that he won’t move up to 147 until he’s “Totally cleans up” the division. It’s hard to say what Khan means by that, because he was ready to proclaim that he’d cleaned up the 140 pound division if he had beaten Danny Garcia earlier in the month. Will Khan decide he’d cleaned up the division if he’s able to beat Garcia in a rematch? Hopefully not, because there are number of fighters that you would think that Khan would have to best for him to actually clean up the division. For Khan to do that he’d have to beat the following light welterweights:

Mike Alvarado
Lucas Matthysse
Ajose Olusegun
Lamont Peterson
Juan Manuel Marquez

Do you honestly think Khan will fight all those guys? I don’t. I see Khan facing Garcia again and none of the other fighters. If Khan does stick around at 140, he’ll likely fight some of the contenders but no one like these guys.
