Image: Khan-Garcia to fight for Ring Magazine 140 lb title on Saturday(Hogan Photos) By William Mackay: There will be more than just the WBA and WBC light welterweight titles at stake this Saturday night in the fight between WBC 140 pound champion Danny Garcia and WBA champ Amir Khan. There will also be the Ring magazine light welterweight title up for grabs in this fight. Khan is rated #1, and Garcia #2 in the Ring Magazine ratings while the top champion spot is still vacant.

Khan bragged about the titles that will be on the line for the fight in his twitter page, saying “I’ve been reinstated as the WBA champion. The WBC and also Ring Magzaine belt will also be on the line. 3 titles up for grabs!”

This is interesting that Khan is rated #1 and Garcia #2 by the Ring Magazine, because it really sells short the other top fighters in the division like Lucas Matthysse, Mike Alvarado and Ajose Olusegun, who I think might beat both Khan and Garcia. Of course, when you have a champion given without all the guys getting a chance, it seems kind of cheap and paper-like.

For the Ring magazine light welterweight title to mean anything you have a tournament to where all the top guys can fight each other to get a real champion. Otherwise all you’ve basically got a champion that won a popularity contest rather than a real title that he had to compete for. What good is a champion that is picked out from guesswork rather than proving it in the ring. I don’t see Khan or Garcia as having fought enough guys to be a champion of anything. To me, Khan is the WBA paper champion and Garcia is the WBC paper champion. All we’ll get on Saturday is a paper champion that emerges from that fight.
