Khan to Froch: You can retire; I’m not retiring!

Image: Khan to Froch: You can retire; I'm not retiring!By William Mackay: In response to IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch’s recent comments, Amir Khan is saying he won’t be retiring. Instead, he intends on continuing with his career to try and turn things around somehow, someway.

Froch recently said that he’d retire if he were to have lost his fight to Lucian Bute. Froch didn’t suggest that Khan retire; only that he himself would retire if he were to lose to Bute badly.

However, Khan fired back at Froch anyway, saying to the guardian.co.uk “If he wants to retire, he can retire, he’s talking about retiring. I’m in a tougher division. I’m fighting better opposition and I’m a bigger name than him, and I think that’s what burns him…I’ll come back a lot better and a lot stronger.”

I wouldn’t say that Khan is in a better division that Froch. I don’t agree with that at all. The light welterweight division is actually a weak one right now with Tim Bradley, Victor Ortiz, Marcos Maidana and Devon Alexander all having moved up in weight to the welterweight division. The 140 pound division only has a small handful of names, and Khan should in theory be doing well. Unfortunately, he’s struggling in defeats against Lamont Peterson and Garcia.

I also disagree with Khan facing better opposition than Froch. I think Froch is clearly facing the better opposition compared to Khan. I mean, look at the guys that Khan has been facing the last several years:

Breidis Prescott – decent fighter but not great
Paul McCloskey – light hitting fringe contender
Marcos Maidana – crude brawler
Zab Judah – way past his best when Khan fought him
Lamont Peterson – light hitting fighter that was already exposed
Paulie Malignaggi – No power and was already beaten by Hatton
Dmitriy Salita – totally unproven at the time Khan fought him
Andriy Kotelnyk – little power
Marco Antonio Barrera – past his best and fighting above his weight
Oisin Fagan – who?

Those guys aren’t all that impressive.

Here’s Froch’s competition in the past couple of years

Andre Ward
Lucian Bute
Andre Dirrell
Mikkel Kessler
Arthur Abraham
Jermain Taylor
Jean Pascal

I don’t know about you but I rate Froch’s competition as much better than what Khan has faced.
