Groves could taste defeat tonight against Sierra

Image: Groves could taste defeat tonight against SierraBy Scott Gilfoid: An interesting fight between British super middleweight champion George Groves (14-0, 11 KO’s) and Francisco Sierra (24-5-1, 22 KO’s) has been thrown in for tonight’s undercard of the Robert Guerrero vs. Selcuk Adyin fight on Showtime at the HP Pavilion, in San Jose, California.

It’s an eight round preliminary bout. I’m not sure why Golden Boy Promotions has added this fight to the card, though, because neither fighter has a fan base in San Jose, California as far as I can tell. Seems like a weird addition to the card. At any rate, Groves has been bragging lately about how he’s going to show all the different levels to his game in this fight, and how he’s hoping he can win some U.S fans by looking impressive.

Well, I sure hope he does, because he hasn’t been impressing lately with his hit and run style of fighting. I’d like to see Groves show some more wrinkles in his game other than the same tired feints that he usually uses, but we’ll have to wait and see. I think Groves will get knocked cold if he tries to punch with Sierra tonight, because Sierra is a huge puncher, and arguably a lot stronger than Kenny Anderson, who had Groves down on the canvas in 2010.

If Groves tries to match his power against Sierra, they’ll be scooping Groves up off the canvas before long. Sierra is made for that game, whereas Groves is one of those defensive fighters that flies around the ring trying not to get hit all night. In Groves’ fight with James DeGale last year, Groves looked weak each time DeGale was able to get him into a sustained exchange.

The thing is DeGale isn’t a big puncher himself and that kind of makes you wonder how Groves will be able to do now that he’s actually fighting someone with some real power in Sierra. If Sierra can land one of his big right hands clean, he’ll have Groves down on the canvas for sure. If Groves can recover from the shot, he’ll likely go into the survival mode and run for the remainder for the fight using his feints for diversion. In other words, the fight will end up boring to watch from that point on.
