Image: George Groves suffers terrible cut in victory over Sierra; September 14th fight with Kenny Anderson likely to be shelvedBy Scott Gilfoid: George Groves (15-0, 12 KO’s) was able to stop Francisco Sierra (25-6-1, 22 KO’s) in a sloppy 6th round TKO at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. I’m betting Groves’ fans are probably frothing at the mouth about Groves’ victory tonight, but I wasn’t all that impressed.

Groves looked little better than the 2nd tier fighter Sierra. If he can’t even dominate a C level fighter like Sierra what does that tell you about Groves’ future? There’s nothing to gloat about as far as I can see. Sierra had Groves hurt in the 5th when he blasted him with a belly shot. Too bad there wasn’t more time in the round because I would have loved to have seen how Groves would have responded.

But it’s pretty much academic at this point that Groves won’t be able to fight on September 14th against Kenny Anderson at Wembley because of the nasty cut that Groves suffered above his right in the 3rd from Sierra.

I can’t remember the last fight I saw involving Groves where he wasn’t cut. He just seems to be prone to getting cut for some reason. Call it glass skin or whatever, the boy gets cut way too much. Heck, Groves just came off a nose injury that wiped out a title fight against WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz. Now Groves has got a bad cut that has little chance of being healed in time for him to fight Anderson in a rematch on September 14th. Oh well. More time wasted in Groves’ career I guess.

As far as the fight went, it was basically an even fight going into the 6th round when Groves flattened Sierra with a four punch combo. The fight was halted after Sierra was drilled with some additional shots after he made the mistake of getting up. The guy should have stayed down or had the presence to grab Groves to ride out the round.
