Image: George Groves proves his worthBy Mark Havey: Last night Saint George Groves dazzled with a spectacular win against Mexican Francisco Sierra. Despite suffering from a deep cut, Groves forced a stoppage when Sierra’s corner threw in the towel in the 5th round. To be fair Sierra was seconds away from going down anyway.

I have been a fan of Groves for a long time and have been fortunate enough to chat with him in the past. his nice guy image is all real. But even I thought he would struggle against Sierra. But I was actually impressed. To stop a Mexican in the 5th round and still being comparatively inexperienced, shows the superiority of George Groves. Another thing that is note worthy is his absence from boxing due to injury. I expected this to provide problem, and whilst I have to admit that his defence might have been better, the punches that Groves bombarded Sierra with revealed no signs of ring rust.

People have attempted to discredit Groves for this win. One writer has called him sloppy. I don’t disagree, but that is a very uninformative point from a very biased writer. Let’s remember that Groves sustained a cut from a clash of heads. That cut would have prohibited him seeing the final bell. The fight would have been stopped. What was groves to do? He needed a knockout, he went after it, he got it. so he can be excused for not boxing a intelligent fight. As soon as that cut opened, intelligence wasn’t going to win the fight, raw power was the only thing that could do that. Sierra is a big puncher so I’m sure that Groves plan was to box, but that versatility just shows his talent.
