Image: Escobedo suffers broken nose and injured arm in Broner fightBy Dan Ambrose: Vincente Escobedo (26-4, 15 KO’s) really took some punishment in his 5th round TKO loss to Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) last Saturday night. Escobedo suffered a broken nose in the 3rd round when he was hit by elbow from Broner, and he also was hit with elbow on his right bicep that made the arm nearly useless to him.

It’s unclear what the extent of the damage to Escobedo’s right arm will be until later. As of now, he’s being told that it’s a bruise.

Escobedo told RingTV “I went to the hospital after the fight and they said that my nose was broken. I felt it like in the third round. I could feel my nose getting numb, and I’ve never felt that kind of pain.”

Escobedo will reportedly keep his #1 WBO ranking despite the loss to Broner. This will put him position to fight for the vacant WBO super featherweight title in his next fight, which he seems happening next year. The #2 WBO contender is Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1, 20 KO’s), and that would be a really tough fight for Escobedo, because Burgos can punch and Escobedo doesn’t have the same kind of power to match him. Burgos is nowhere near as powerful or as good as Broner, but he’s definitely a bigger puncher Escobedo.

Escobedo isn’t taking as much heat as he probably should because of Broner coming into the fight a little heavier than him at 147 lbs compared to the 142 pound Escobedo. A lot of boxing fans only know about Broner missing the weigh-in weight, and naturally assume that he was a lot heavier than Escobedo for the fight, but he wasn’t. It was only five pounds difference.
