Don’t be surprised if Canelo Alvarez faces Robert Guerrero in the near future

Image: Don't be surprised if Canelo Alvarez faces Robert Guerrero in the near futureBy Dan Ambrose: Robert Guerrero’s win over Selcuk Aydin may not have been enough to get him a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2012 or 2013, but it could get him a match-up against WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez later on this year unless I miss my guess. Both Guerrero and Alvarez are Golden Boy Promotions fighters, and we’ve already seen how Golden Boy has no problems with matching Alvarez against welterweights.

Alvarez won his WBC 154 pound title last year against welterweight Matthew Hatton. The World Boxing Council went along with it and allowed the Alvarez-Hatton fight go go forward despite the fact that Hatton wasn’t even ranked in the top 15 in the junior middleweight division. Now, Alvarez will be fighting WBC Silver welterweight champion Josesito Lopez on September 15th instead of one of the junior middleweight contenders. Again, the WBC has gone along with this and allowed the Alvarez-Lopez fight to go ahead. It’s sad because all the top contenders in the junior middleweight division are being skipped over while this fight happens.

Alvarez wants a fight with Mayweather in November or December this year, but with Mayweather getting out of jail next week and likely in terrible shape due to his three months of confinement in a small cell, he won’t be ready to take a tough fight like this. As such, I can see Golden Boy lining up Robert Guerrero, another welterweight, for Alvarez in November or December in another one of Golden Boy’s in house fights. Guerrero will get the big payday he’s been hoping for all this time, although it won’t be nearly as big as it would be if Mayweather showed interest in fighting him.

As far as the fight goes, Guerrero will be beaten to a pulp by Saul Alvarez. I can’t see that fight going 12 rounds even if Guerrero clinches him all night long or runs.
