Image: De La Hoya thinks Escobedo might beat BronerBy Scott Gilfoid: Oscar De La Hoya thinks that former WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner may be ripe for an upset loss to Vincente Escobedo tonight when the two square off on HBO at the U.S. Bank Arena, in Cincinnati, Ohio. De La Hoya’s reasoning is because of Broner coming in three pounds over the initial weigh-in on Friday. He believes that Broner will be weakened from struggling to make the 130 pound weight limit.

De La Hoya said on his twitter “Broner was three pounds overweight, fight still on tonight on HBO. Do I smell upset? Very unprofessional of Broner. Vicente insists he will dethrone him.”

While I do think Broner dropped the ball by not making weight for the fight, I don’t feel that he’s going to be weakened in any way for the fight. The fact that he didn’t make weight on Friday and then on Saturday during the secondary weigh-in suggests that he’s not even bothered about draining himself to make weight. He’s more concerned with the fight itself.

I don’t see any upset in this fight. If anything, Broner coming in heavier tells me that this is going to be a total massacre with poor Escobedo getting blasted out in two or three rounds at best. He’s smaller, weaker, slower and less skilled than Broner. You factor in all the things that Escobedo has going against him in this fight and you can only come to one outcome – he’s going to get buried by Broner. All I’m hoping for is that Escobedo can make it six rounds so that boxing fans tuning into the fight on HBO will get a chance to see Broner show his Mayweather-esque skills. The 22-year-old Broner is going to be the next Mayweather in the future and this fight is just one tiny step in the direction of super stardom for Broner.
