By Scott Gilfoid: With the only real competitor to WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (25-0, 13 KOs) at 168 lbs currently in between fights, Ward will be facing the best fighter in the light heavyweight division in WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (31-1, 17 KO’s) on September 8th at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

This is what you’d call a pick em fight that’s nearly impossible to choose the winner. Both Dawson and Ward huge talents with ability that goes well beyond most of their opponents in their respective divisions. Ward recently swept through the Super Six tournament, beating all the so-called best fighters in the division with ease. There was no one that could give Ward a decent fight because they were so far out of his league.

His talent made everyone he faced look like pathetic amateurs. The only guy that stood a chance at beating was Andre Dirrell, but he was fouled out of the tournament after getting hit hard after he slipped to the canvas in one of his bouts. With Dirrell out of the picture, Ward was able to dominate what was left.

Ward has been pretty much the bigger guy in the vast majority of his bouts during his eight-year pro career, but on September 8th he’s going to be giving away at least two inches in height to the 6’2″ Dawson and this could be a problem for Ward if he can’t take the fight to the inside.

Dawson, 29, has always been a strictly outside fighter who dominates with his long reach, great jab and nice combinations. He doesn’t bother fighting on the inside and he makes sure that his opponents don’t force him into that game by moving around the ring when his opposition try and crowd him.

Dawson is coming off a nice 12 round decision win over Bernard Hopkins last April. It was a long awaited fight, as Dawson had been trying to get a fight with Hopkins for ages. When it finally came, Dawson dominated the spoiling older fighter without too many problems.
