Chavez Jr. can’t take Sergio Martinez’s big shots

Image: Chavez Jr. can't take Sergio Martinez's big shotsBy Dan Ambrose: I hope for WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s sake that his trainer Freddie Roach is going to try and teach him some defense before he steps in the ring to fight former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KO’s) on September 15th at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While Jim Lampley from HBO is impressed with Chavez Jr’s ability to take huge head shots, I think there are limits to what Chavez Jr. can take, and we’ll see those limits breached by Martinez. Chavez Jr. is simply too easy to hit, and he’s had it pretty easy not having faced anyone.

Chavez Jr. took punishment in his win over the heavy-handed Marco Antonio Rubio last February. You could see how puffy Chavez Jr’s eyes were at the end of the fight, but Rubio isn’t a huge puncher like Martinez. He doesn’t have the speed that Martinez has either. Chavez Jr. can take a fair shot, but the biggest punchers he’s been in with are Andy Lee and Rubio.

Neither of those guys are in the same league as Martinez, and we’re going to see the difference between his power and theirs in this fight. I just hope Chavez Jr. doesn’t think he’s going to try and walk though Martinez’s huge shots in this fight, because Chavez Jr. will be a wreck by the 9th round if he does.

You’d like Chavez Jr. to be able to function after the fight, and not be wondering where he’s at. The best way for that to happen is if Roach teaches him some boxing technique. Believe me, Chavez Jr. won’t be able to win this fight simply by rehydrating up 20 pounds after the weigh-in to come in over 180. That won’t work because he’ll still be too slow and wide open for Martinez’s huge sledgehammer shots. I think we’re going to see Chavez Jr. exposed finally in this fight with him getting knocked out, and left in a bloody pile on the canvas by the end of this fight.
