The welterweights will be aiming to secure a win and a shot at the IBF welterweight world championship currently held by Randall Bailey. This week Carson took some time to talk with me about this huge clash.

Back in March, the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield was once again the venue as Kell comfortably outpointed fellow Brit and former European welterweight champion, Matthew Hatton. It’s safe to say that Carson wasn’t very impressed with his performance that night. “I wasn’t impressed and he made a lot of mistakes, if Hatton had a bit more power he would have had Kell in a lot more trouble and he didn’t really capitalize on Kell’s mistakes but I think I’ll be able to capitalize on those mistakes because I’m a much bigger and stronger fighter than Matthew Hatton.”

I asked Carson if he thinks that the former British welterweight champion has ever faced a tougher opponent in his career. “No not at all, not even close. He’s been hand-picked (opponents) and actually a lot of the guys he’s been fighting lately were a lot smaller, natural 140lb’ers. We’ll see how he reacts to a real 147lb’er on July 7th.”

Going into the big fight on Saturday night, Carson is on a streak of 8 consecutive stoppage victories against opponents with a combined record of (201-87-3). A sprinkling of defeats throughout his career give the impression that it will be an easy night for the undefeated, Kell Brook.

Something we’ve unfortunately seen throughout the boxing world is a growing number of hometown and just plain bad decisions. This is something that fails to worry Jones. “That’s why I don’t plan on leaving it in the judge’s hands. I plan on getting in there and taking care of business and hopefully stopping Kell in the later rounds. It’s my job to make sure that I don’t get screwed over. I have to beat him so bad that they have no choice but to give me what I deserve.”

You wouldn’t expect that a veteran of 44 professional fights would only be 25 years of age, but that’s exactly the situation for Carson. The experience gained throughout his career will be something he’ll hope to benefit from on the night. One thing he hasn’t experienced in his career is a fight outside the United States. Is this something that will worry him on July 7th? “I don’t mind. A fight is a fight whether it’s in my backyard or his backyard because nobody can help you when you’re in there; it’s just me and him, one on one. It doesn’t bother me coming over there, I’m kinda glad it’s over there, it gives me a chance to visit the UK.”

The IBF recently crowned a new welterweight champion in the division when Randall Bailey surprisingly KO’d the undefeated prospect, Mike Jones “It was a shock but you can’t ever count that guy out. He has a huge right-hand and Mike Jones fought like he was terrified the whole fight, you could see it in his eyes, you could see it in his movement. Randall Bailey came to fight.”

The current IBF rankings have Carson rated at No.3 just one spot ahead of Kell in No.4 and a win for either man could guarantee a title shot in the near future. “Bailey might actually be fighting Devon Alexander now, so it’d have to be the winner of that but I’ll fight anybody at the top of the division, it doesn’t matter.”
