Image: Brook beats Jones in a close scrappy fightBy Benny James: Kell Brook (28-0, 18 KO’s) defeats American Carson Jones (34-9-2, 24 KO’s) in a scrappy 12 round majority decision in his home town of Sheffield, England.

A fight that is bound to cause controversy among our American cousins, Kell Brook and Carson Jones battled it out for 12 tough rounds in a very close fight.

Kell Brook dominated the first 6 rounds, he was full of energy and managed to consistently land clean power shots while controlling the action and pace. Dominic Ingle in Brook’s corner kept talking about “its all about the first 6 rounds”. It is my opinion that they underestimated Jones’s durability and planned on taking him out in the first half of the fight. Kell Brook was not prepared to go for 12 rounds.

In the second half of the fight Jones smelt blood and increased his pace and took control of the action for most of the rounds. He was not landing cleanly and it was a very messy 6 rounds. Kell Brook’s nose got broken which made it look a lot worse than it was.

The way I saw it Brook won by 1 maybe 2 rounds tonight, but having said that I would not have been surprised if it was announced as a draw.

Hopefully this will be a huge learning experience for Kell Brook, I hope he will shut up about becoming a superstar, forget about how well known he is in America, focus on his fitness, his stamina. He has the speed, the skill, the power, but he needs to be able to maintain his pace for 12 rounds.

Congratulations to Kell Brook for a hard earned victory. Well done to Carson Jones for fighting his heart out.
