Image: Broner poised to be one of the great ones if he keeps improvingBy Chris Williams: Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) continues to make believers out of the doubters in the boxing world after defeating Vincente Escobedo (26-4, 15 KO’s) by a 5th round TKO on Saturday night in a fight where Broner could do nothing wrong. He opened up with both barrels in the 5th, and it looked bad for Escobedo until his corner halted the fight.

Broner had too much power and speed for Escobedo to contend with in this fight and he made it look easy. The thing is Escobedo is a very good fighter, and I don’t know of anyone that’s done anything like this to him before. Broner simply had too much talent for the 30-year-old Escobedo to handle tonight. Broner took some shots from Escobedo, but the difference in power between the two of them was startling.

This win puts Broner up a notch, as he’s now getting better known and he’s ready to step it up to the lightweight division. If Broner can continue to progress at a rapid pace like this, he could wind up a potential opponent for Manny Pacquiao in the futrue if Pacquiao doesn’t retire in the next year. We don’t know what to expect of Pacquiao right now, because he lost his last fight to Tim Bradley. Pacquiao looks like he’s losing his skills in a major way. But if he can keep it together for at least one more year while Broner is making a bigger name for himself, then we could possibly see Broner as a future opponent Pacquiao.

It might not be as interesting a fight as Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Pacquiao, but with Pacquiao still wanting a 50-50 deal with Mayweather. it could open a window for the Mayweather-like Broner to get a fight against Pacquiao if he can’t get a bout against Mayweather. Broner, with his Mayweather-esque style of fighting, it would be like boxing fans were watching Mayweather vs. Pacquiao.
