Broner looks good enough to beat Khan right now

Image: Broner looks good enough to beat Khan right nowBy William Mackay: The unbeaten Adrien Broner’s impressive performance against Vincente Escobedo last Saturday night tells me that the 22-year-old Broner is likely more than good enough to beat Amir Khan if Broner decides to step it up to the light welterweight division in the near future.

Khan wants a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and has been squawking in the media for well over a year now about wanting that fight, but it’s probably not going to happen for ages now that Khan has been beaten by Danny Garcia. Instead, Khan should look to face the next best thing by taking on the Mayweather-esque Broner, who is an almost perfect copy of Mayweather, albeit slightly shorter at 5’7″ compared to the 5’8″ Mayweather.

The size won’t be an issue, because Broner came into his fight weighing 147 pounds for Escobedo, whereas Khan came into his fight against WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia weighing 148 lbs. The only thing that Khan would have over the 5’7″ Broner is three inches in height and a slight speed advantage. Believe it or not, but the reach is the same between Khan and Broner. Both fighters have a 71 inch reach. Broner clearly has long arms for his height, and that would take away any size advantage that Khan would have against Broner.

Broner is the bigger puncher compared to Khan and the much better fighter in terms of defense. He’s just a much better fighter than Khan all around. Broner’s chin is better, his speed is better, his defense is better and he’s a much more composed fighter compared to Khan. He doesn’t run around the ring like he’s lost his senses completely when faced with adversity. Broner’s ring IQ appears to be a lot better than Khan’s.

Broner should forget about the lightweight division and move up to the light welterweight division and go after Khan.
