Image: Broner-Escobedo, Thurman-TBA on July 21st on HBOBy Scott Gilfoid: WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (23-0, 19 KO’s) will be showing off his talent in front of American television against #1 World Boxing Organization contender Vicente Escobedo (26-3, 15 KO’s) on July 21st at the U.S. Bank Arena, Cincinnati, Ohio. In the co-feather bout, little known unbeaten welterweight prospect Keith Thurman (17-0, 16 KO’s) will be battling an opponent to be named later.

The 23-year-old Thurman was supposed to be facing HBO house fighter Marcos Maidana, but it looks like Maidana had second thoughts about that fight because he backed out. Some boxing fans think Maidana ducked Thurman after seeing how hard he punches and how big he is. At the end of the day it was probably a wise decision on Maidana’s part because he would have been spanked by Thurman, and that might have messed up Maidana’s future paydays.

The real story on this card is the Broner-Escobedo fight. It’s going to be a real treat watching Broner show his talent against Escobedo. As far the fight goes, it’s going to be a huge mismatch but that’s not Broner’s fault. It would be a mismatch no matter who he faces, because he’s just too talented for his own good. With Broner, he’s so far ahead of the competition that he dominates everyone. I wouldn’t mind seeing Broner in with someone like Gary Russell Jr. or featherweight contender Javier Fortuna, but those guys have small frame and are too easy to hit. Broner would walk right through those guys and blast them out in two or three rounds. There is no threat to Broner right now, because he’s too good.

Escobedo is going to give it a good try on July 21st, but talent won’t be there for him. It’s not something where he can will himself to victory by fighting hard. You’ve got to have the talent if you want to beat a champion like Broner.
