Boxing will be fine without Pacquiao

Image: Boxing will be fine without PacquiaoBy Chris Williams: In rebuttal to the article earlier today where a fan of Manny Pacquiao stated that boxing needs him. I totally disagree with that opinion. Boxing will be completely fine without Pacquiao, because it’s not as if he’s fought the guy that we wanted him to fight – Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Pacquiao had the chance to make that fight with Mayweather in 2010, but when Mayweather asked for random blood tests up to 14 days before the fight, Pacquiao couldn’t agree to that. Instead of seeing that fight, Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum quickly shuffled in one of his Top Rank stable fighters Joshua Clottey, which turned out to be an incredibly boring fight despite the promises made by Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach that Clottey would be a more exciting opponent than Mayweather. I still get a chuckle when I remember that line.

As far as Pacquiao’s other fights, he’s had catchweight handicap bouts against Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito for title belts, which I don’t understand how those were permitted without an asterisk next to the official record. Pacquiao’s win over Oscar De La Hoya in 2008 came against an over-the-hill fighter who was weight drained. The same goes for Pacquiao’s win over Ricky Hatton.

Pacquiao has had three fights against Juan Manuel Marquez and all three of them have been controversial with many boxing fans feeling Marquez won all three fights. Pacquiao won two of them with their first fight ending in a draw.

Boxing is going to be fine without Pacquiao, because there are quality fighters out there to carry the sport, and no doubt those fighters won’t have issues when it comes to taking on the top fighters in their weight classes.
