Image: Beltran defeats Lundy, Broner dream is now finishedBy Jim Dower: Lightweight contender Hank Lundy (22-2-1, 11 KO’s) was shockingly beaten on Friday night by Ray Beltran (26-6, 17 KO’s) by a 10 round majority decision at the Resorts Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The final judges’ scores were 96-94, 96-94 and 95-95.

Beltran, who works as a sparring partner for Manny Pacquiao at times, really took the fight to Lundy and applied a lot of steady pressure. Beltran’s team had done their homework well and realized the way to beat Lundy was by putting a lot of pressure on him and forcing him to fight at a higher pace than he’s accustomed to. Lundy took a lot of shots from Beltran and looked flustered and unable to make the adjustments he needed to.

In the third round, Beltran worked Lundy over with left hooks to the body while Lundy foolishly fought with his back against the ropes. In the last seconds of the round, Beltran staggered Lundy with a left hook to the head that caused Lundy to sag. Had there been more time in the round, Beltran would have likely ended the fight. In the same round, Beltran suffered a cut on the left side of his eye.

With this loss, Lundy can forget about his dream of fighting former WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner. Lundy had recently made comments about wanting to fight Broner now that he’s moving up to the lightweight division, but this loss erases the little hope there ever was for Lundy.

In other action, super middleweight Farah Ennis (20-1, 12 KO’s) defeated Richard Pierson (11-3, 8 KO’s) by a 10 round unanimous decision. The final judges scores were 99-91, 98-92 and 98-92.
