Aydin: I’m going to break Guerrero’s jaw

Image: Aydin: I'm going to break Guerrero's jawBy Jason Kim: #1 WBC welterweight contender Selcuk Aydin (23-0, 17 KO’s) took his pre-fight banter a step further than most fighters typically do by not only saying that he plans on beating #5 Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KO’s) on July 28th, but also breaking his jaw in the process. A threat that is kind of taking things too far, because it’s a very serious injury for a fighter to have.

Aydin said this as quoted by fightnews.com “You speak like a politician. You need to spend more time training and strengthening your jaw because I’m going to break it.”

Naturally, Guerrero didn’t take too well to having Aydin threaten to physically injure him, saying “Selcuk has no idea what I’ve been through.”

Guerrero will be moving up two divisions from lightweight to take the fight with Aydin, as Guerrero wants to get a shot against WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and by facing Aydin for the WBC welterweight interim title on the 28th, Guerrero will at least be putting himself in the position to get a fight with Mayweather in theory.

It still probably won’t get Guerrero the fight because he’s not a huge fan draw, and there’s not a lot of reasons for Mayweather to take the fight with the tall southpaw. Guerrero has too many things working against him in trying to get the Mayweather bout, starting with his jump up in weight. Guerrero is coming off of surgery on his left rotator cuff, and it still remains to be seen whether Guerrero will have enough power in his shoulder for him to keep the hard hitting Aydin off of him.

For Guerrero to win he’s going to have to keep Aydin on the outside and far enough away so that he can’t land his big power shots. Aydin is very beatable, but he’s not someone you can expect to defeat without taking a lot of punishment along the way.
