Image: Angel Garcia: Khan is nothing but a name; he had his dayBy William Mackay: WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia’s father/trainer Angel Garcia doesn’t see anything special from the newly reinstated WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan, and he thinks his time is up now that he’s fighting Danny on Saturday.

Angel said to Sky Sports News “I’m not a racist. Khan had his day, and on July 14th, he [Danny] will still be undefeated. He is [overrated]. Great Britain treats him good, honestly. I wish Danny lived in Great Britain because they take care of you. Amir Khan one a silver medal in the Olympics. In America if you win a silver medal it’s nothing. Khan has got a big name. That’s what boxing is. It’s his name. As a fighter, he’s nothing special. He’s a regular fighter like everyone else.”

Angel is 100 percent correct about American not caring if a fighter wins a silver medal in the Olympics. They hardly care much even if you win a gold medal. It’s not like before when boxing was used to be broadcast on premium television stations like CBS. Back then, you’re chances of becoming a star were high if you won a gold medal, but not now. You can still be invisible if you win a gold. Britain made a big deal out of Khan after he won a silver medal, and perhaps that’s because it’s such a small country.

A silver medal is a big deal. This obviously has helped Khan a great deal, because he’s had huge live and television audiences watching him through a lot of his fights against overmatched weak opposition. That wouldn’t happen in the U.S. He’d be lucky to get 1000 fans to come see him fight if he was facing stiffs over here like he’s done in the UK.

Khan is going to be without any excuses if he loses this fight, and he may lose it if he can’t handle a toe-to-toe fight against Garcia. Khan can’t foul his way through it thinking he’ll get a free pass by the referee. They’re obviously going to be watching for Khan’s fouling, because he did so much of it during his loss to Lamont Peterson in his last fight.
