Image: Amir Khan can learn from Mayweather JrBy Babatis Banda: Amir Khan is a decent fighter. I am not sure if Khan can be considered an elite fighter anymore, but what Amir has is plenty of youth and speed. He does not possess elite skill, he has no great power and he lacks patience. Amir needs to learn to balance his deficiencies and his strengths.

Unfortunately, Amir is not a great thinker in the ring, he has no firm ring principles and he swings with his feelings. Amir’s great enemy is his ‘over confidence’ and this young gentleman needs to learn to chew first before swallowing.

Amir is in a rush for fame, but unfortunately he may end up at the end of the pile if he does not do something intelligent soon. Personally, I feel Amir needs to start by getting a trainer that is 100% committed to him. He needs somebody energetic to inspire and push him that extra mile. Khan needs to work on his ego and re-model his dreams. He should not dream to belong to Mayweather Jnr and Pacquiao’s club without complimenting it with actual results.

Khan can remain relevant if he swallows his pride and learn from Mayweather jnr. He needs to work on his defence and realize that he hasn’t got a chin like Manny Pacquiao or indeed, Floyd Mayweather. He will never be like Mayweather, but he can learn one or two things. Khan will do better boxing and not brawling. He needs to use more of his fighting mind than the little power that he can deliver. He needs to learn to control the tempo of the fight or to adjust to any demands as they unfold. Mayweather is a natural boxer, it runs in his blood and Khan has no such luxury. Defence is a key to success and Khan Needs to build a fortress for his chin and fight intelligently.

I have a feeling, Khan learnt the wrong stuff from Floyd, he learnt to talk a big, he also learnt to walk tall like Mayweather, but unlike him, Floyd backs it up with performance and results. It is not only talk that has put Floyd where he is, but results. With a huge dent on his record now, it will be terrible to take in another loss. Three losses are a little too much, considering Khan is still climbing the ladder, though he considered himself the cream of the best.

If you are not a one punch finisher like Pacquiao, or other well-known hitters, it is good that you develop your defence skills, your boxing ability and intellect. Khan needs to get to the drawing board, talk less, and watch Floyd Mayweather tapes and they would be a free lesson.
