Image: Will Chavez Jr. dodge Sergio Martinez by moving to 168 after Lee fight?By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (45-0-1, 31 KO’s) is supposed to be facing WBC Diamond middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KO’s) in September provided that Chavez Jr. wins his fight tomorrow night against Andy Lee (28-1, 20 KO’s).

Contracts have been signed and Martinez is very eager to finally get in the ring, although he’s highly skeptical that Chavez Jr. will ever fight him.

Martinez may have good reason to have his doubts, because there’s talk that tomorrow’s fight between Chavez Jr. and Lee will be Chavez Jr’s last fight at 160lbs. He could be moving up to 168 after this fight, and of course if he does that, Chavez Jr. will have a ready made excuse for not having to fight Martinez.

If Chavez Jr. does this it will be kind of sad, because not only does Martinez want to badly get Chavez Jr. in the ring, but a whole lot of hardcore boxing fans wants to see Martinez face Chavez Jr. to see if he’s for real. If Chavez Jr. moves up in weight, it will give some boxing fans the impression that he was ducking Martinez.

Chavez Jr. might as well face Martinez, though, because things won’t get any better for him at 168. If anything, it’ll get a lot worse for him because against guys like Carl Froch, Andre Ward, Kelly Pavlik, Arthur Abraham, Mikkel Kessler, Andre Dirrell, Antony Dirrell, Edwin Rodriguez, Sakio Bika, and Lucian Bute, Chavez Jr. will be hard-pressed to find any victories.

Chavez Jr. no doubt have an incredible mastermind in promoter Bob Arum, who will likely find a minor title for Chavez Jr. to go after if he moves up in weight. However, there’s no easy marks in the super middleweight division, and I can’t see things going well for him at all.
