Why isn’t Cotto angling to get a fight against Pacquiao?

Image: Why isn't Cotto angling to get a fight against Pacquiao?By Dan Ambrose: What seems incredibly strange right now is the silence from former WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto about this Saturday’s fight between Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley.

You would think that Cotto would be speaking up about how he wants to face Pacquiao again to try and avenge his 12th round knockout loss from 2009. So what’s going on with Cotto? Doesn’t he want to fight Pacquiao again to try and even things out? If nothing else, Cotto could at least get a big payday out of the fight with the Filipino star.

I think Cotto is making a mistake by staying silent because if Pacquiao wins his fight against Bradley, which it appears he will, Cotto will be forgotten about unless he makes himself heard. You’ve got Juan Manuel Marquez who will be attending the Pacquiao vs. Bradley fight on Saturday, likely hoping to get the cameras on him so that he can get the HBO talking heads discussing a possible fourth fight between him and Pacquiao. Cotto needs to be there as well so he can try and step in ahead of Marquez and get a fight against Pacquiao before someone else beats him.

Of course, Cotto would stand no chance against Pacquiao in a rematch if he fights like the way he did the last time he fought him. Cotto needs game and badly. A new trainer, a new style of fighting, and some new power. A fight between Cotto and Pacquiao now is a mismatch, but the payday is the thing.

If Cotto wants to maximize the amount of money he can make before he retires, he’ll need to face Pacquiao at least one more time before he retires. A fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. would be ideal if Mayweather is up for a rematch against Cotto. If he isn’t, then Cotto needs to push hard to see if he can lure Pacquiao back in the ring for another huge payday bout.
