What’s in store for Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather?

Image: What’s in store for Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather?By Mark Uliano: Right now Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather is probably sitting in his cell at the Clark County Detention Center in Nevada. One thing that probably isn’t on his mind right now is the sport of boxing, but to us enthusiasts and writers his next fight is on our mind.

He’s currently serving the remainder of his 90-day sentence and will be released August 30th. It wouldn’t be surprising to me that on September 1st Floyd will be back training at his Mayweather Gym in Las Vegas to get his mind back on the sport that’s made him one of the most recognizable names on the plant.

Floyd and his Uncle Roger had told multiple media outlets that he wants one more fight in 2012 and of course the fight fans will want to see the Mega Fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. Unfortunately after doing three months in jail Floyd will most likely be taking a tune-up before a fight of that caliber is considered, if considered at all. With both sides being stuck in a deadlock in regards to whom gets the lion share of the purse this fight has become more of a dream than a reality during the past year.

One name that came up as a possible opponent before the May 5th Floyd Mayweather-Miguel Cotto fight was that of Robert ‘The Ghost’ Guerrero. Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KOs) is moving up in weight for his fight on July 28th against Selcuk Aydin of Turkey for the interim WBC Welterweight title that was last held by Mayweather. Guerrero has been around for a while fighting relatively low tier opposition with his only loss coming back in 2005. Guerrero did avenge that loss six month’s later.

Another name that might possibly be considered is Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22KO). Everyone remembers last September’s debacle in the ring between Ortiz and Mayweather leading to a 4th round KO in favor of Mayweather. I can see this fight being fought at either 147 or 154 as long as Ortiz is able to get past Josesito Lopez on June 23rd on Showtime. Will the fans pay for this rematch is another question. A Miguel Cotto rematch may also be in the cards if no other opposition can be found. After the money that was made on his May 5th card, a Cotto rematch always sits on the back burner due to the amount of fans Cotto brings out to each fight.

On the other hand, Mayweather stated after the Cotto fight that there is a chance of him retiring from the sport yet again due to the lack of talent that Floyd could test himself with. I see two people that could give Floyd a challenge and a legitimate run for his “Money”: Sergio Martinez at 154 or Manny Pacquiao at 147. I see Floyd stepping up and fighting Martinez at 154 before he agrees to a fight with Bob Arum’s promoted Pacquiao. One is a great fight and the other is what the fans have wanted to see for the past two years. A win by Floyd in either fight would definitively put him on top of the P4P rankings, but the Pacquiao fight would solidify his claim as being one of the best in boxing history.
