Ortiz had surgery performed on Sunday night at the Sinai Medical Center in Los Angles to repair Ortiz’s broken jaw he suffered in his 9th round TKO loss to Josesito Lopez last Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Ortiz’s manager Rolando Avellano told RingTV that a metal plate and screws have been placed in Ortiz’s broken jaw to help stabilize it so that the fracture can heal. Ortiz’s mouth will remain wired shut for the next two weeks while his jaw slowly heals.

Avellano said to RingTV “From the fifth round on, Victor Fought with a broken jaw. Victor says he knew that there was a problem because he couldn’t keep his mouth shut. Every time he tried, it would just drop open.”

This obviously made it very difficult for Ortiz to fight, because he was spending a considerable amount of time trying to protect his injured jaw and also trying to keep it closed by placing his glove underneath it.

A rematch between Ortiz and Lopez is a possibility says Avellano. At this point it’s crucial that Ortiz attempt to avenge the defeat, because the loss ruined his plans of facing WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez in a pay-per-view bout on September 15th in Las Vegas. That’s a huge payday that Ortiz won’t be getting now that he’s been beaten by Lopez.

If Ortiz can come back and soundly beat Lopez in a rematch later on this year, he’ll greatly minimize the damage that this defeat did to his career. It’s still going to mess Ortiz up, but it won’t be nearly as bad if he can beat Lopez in a convincing manner in a rematch.
