Image: Tyson Fury fights 38-year-old Vinny Maddalone on July 7thBy Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten #7 WBC, #12 WBO heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (18-0, 13 KO’s) will be taking on another old guy in his next fight when he faces 38-year-old Vinny Maddalone (35-7, 26 KO’s on July 7th at the Hand Arena, Clevedon, Somerset, UK.

For the 24-year-old Fury, this is another old one for him to pad his record with. In his last fight, he defeated 41-year-old Martin Rogan last April in a fight that made no sense at all to have been put together in the first place. Rogan hadn’t fought a halfway decent fighter in three years, and was way out of his class. To show you how much of a joke the fight was, Fury switched from the orthodox to the southpaw stance in the 1st round and fought the entire fight as a southpaw in halting Rogan in the 5th. I imagine Fury can fight as a southpaw against Maddalone and get similar results if he wants to. This is a mismatch.

Maddalone has lost three out of his last seven fights, losing to Denis Boytsov, Jean Marc Mormeck and Tomasz Adamek. Maddalone is good when you put him in with B level guys, but when you step him up against a decent fighter, he gets beaten.

Fury is taking his time trying to work up to a title shot. Right now, he would be blown by Wladimir Klitschko and Vitali Klitschko. But if he waits another seven or eight years, he may have a chance at beating Wladimir. Of course, Wladimir will be long gone by then and other heavyweights will move in to take the top spot.

Fury is lacking in the power and defensive department. He’ll get whipped if he faces someone like Kevin Johnson or Kubrat Pulev. He’s limited to say the least, so maybe it’s better than he keeps fighting the Maddalones of the heavyweight division to avoid the inevitable.
