Saul Alvarez has very few options to replace Kirkland

Image: Saul Alvarez has very few options to replace KirklandBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions didn’t do WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez by making his September 15th fight a pay per view bout, because he’s already had two well known fighters pull out of the fight due to injuries with Paul Williams and James Kirkland.

Since there’s pressure to get a high quality opponent due to the fight being PPV, Alvarez is stuck with the prospect of either facing a good fighter like Erislandy Lara and losing or taking on another weak opponent and ending up with dreadful PPV numbers.

Golden Boy has been taking it easy with Alvarez despite him holding down a title, but they’re going to have to make a big decision now with his September 15th fight. Do they put him in with another old timer like the ones he’s been consistently fighting or do they go ahead and finally put him in with someone that has a pulse for once. They’ve got to be wrestling with this, because Alvarez looks good, but he also looks very, very beatable.

Alvarez’s options are pretty much down to these fighters:

Carlos Molina
Erislandy Lara
Austin Trout
Cornelius Bundrage
Sergey Dzinziruk

A PPV bout between Alvarez against half of those fighters would likely draw flies even if Golden Boy stacks the undercard. It doesn’t like they are because all they’re offering right now is Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Daniel Ponce De Leon as the co-feature bout. I don’t know about you, but I’m not particularly interested in paying big money to see those guys fight. I’d watch them on regular cable but I’d never pay a dime to see Gonzalez or De Leon fight. I’ve seen both get beaten too many times for me to want to pay to watch them.
