Roach: Bradley’s muscles will make him slow

Image: Roach: Bradley's muscles will make him slowBy Chris Williams: In the latest awful episode of Pacquiao/Bradley 24/7 on HBO, trainer Freddie Roach went about motivating his fighter WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao in a simplistic manner using odd comparisons and faulty reasoning.

Roach believes that because Tim Bradley has muscles, he’s therefore going to be slow and beatable for Pacquiao.

Here’s what Roach said “He [Bradley] has all that muscle. No problem. With a lot of muscle, he’s going to be very slow. [Ricky] Hatton had good muscles; [Shane] Mosley had good muscles too. [Miguel] Cotto had good muscles.”

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anything more stupid than Roach’s argument to try and motivate Pacquiao. If Roach really wanted to be technical about it, he might as well have mentioned Pacquiao as well, because he’s actually has more muscle than Hatton, Cotto and Bradley. If that’s criteria for someone being slow and beatable, then Roach would have to eliminate fighters like Sergio Martinez, Juan Manuel Marquez, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Guillermo Rigondeaux, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Andre Ward, and Wladimir Klitschko, because they all have a lot of muscle.

Roach is really reaching in trying to motivate Pacquiao. Bradley may have some muscle, but he’s hardly slow and he’s not like Hatton or the sparring partner Ruslan Provodnikov that Roach hired because he believes that his style is identical to Bradley. I’ve never seen a more different fighter in my life, and it worries me that Roach is seeing things in such a twisted manner. It suggests that he’s over-simplifying things in his head. Hopefully, Pacquiao isn’t gullible enough to buy the stuff Roach is trying to sell to him because if he goes into the Bradley fight on Saturday assuming he’s going to be slow, he’s going to be in for a rude awakening when he starts getting lit up. I wonder what Roach will say at that point? I can imagine Roach saying to a bloody and battered Pacquiao, ‘See, I told you Bradley was slow.’
