Rigondeaux ready to give Donaire a pounding

Image: Rigondeaux ready to give Donaire a poundingBy Chris Williams: In the past, Nonito Donaire (28-1, 18 KO’s) didn’t want to fight Guillermo Rigondeaux (10-0, 8 KO’s) because he didn’t have a title, and there was nothing that the Cuban had to offer him. Now that Rigondeaux has the WBA super bantamweight title, Donaire says Rigondeaux lacks experience at the pro level for him to bother fighting him.

Instead of facing Rigondeaux, Donaire is taking on an arguably much lesser threat in IBF 122 pound champion Jeffrey Mathebula on July 7th in Carson, California. It’s a winnable fight for Donaire, and that’s about all you can say about the fight. Pretty much no one is interested in this fight, because next to no one has ever seen Mathebula fight. I’ve never seen any of Mathebula’s fights televised in the United States, and if you look at Youtube, you’ll find none of Mathebula’s fights. So basically Donaire is fighting a guy that is almost invisible, and for what? It’s not going to be a big fight, because no one knows the guy. So why isn’t Donaire fighting Rigondeaux? He’s much better known in the U.S.

Rigondeaux told thaboxingvoice.com “He’s [Donaire] not the only one that wants all the belts. I do too! I’m coming after all his belts, no matter what weight class he’s in. Enough with the talking Nonito Donito, sign up for your a** whooping, any place, any time!”

Rigondeaux is wasting his time trying to get a fight against Donaire, because that’s probably not going to happen. If Donaire beats Mathebula, he’ll be going after Abner Mares, Jorge Arce or Toshiaki Nishioka next. He plans on trying fight all those guys, although I don’t see it as being possible for Donaire to fight Mares because Mares fights for Golden Boy Promotions and his fights are televised on a different cable network.
