More turmoil for Chisora

McKenna (McJack): Just when you thought things could not get any worse for Derek Chisora (15-3, 9 KO’s) his long time mentor and coach Don Charles have apparently gotten into a row with just over two weeks remaining before his battle with former World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight champion David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s).

The latest news coming out of Chisora’s training camp is that he was attacked by his own trainer Don Charles. What makes the news so disturbing is that Charles has been like a father figure to “Del-Boy” and their relationship goes back ten years.

Charles acknowledges that he physically attacked Chisora after Derek requested that Charles take his (Chisora’s) head gear off during a training session while preparing for his upcoming fight with Haye. At this point it is not known what Chisora said to provoke Charles.

Charles was quoted in the Mail Online saying the following:

“I won’t go into details as to why he wanted his head gear off. There’s a way to tell someone something and it’s called respect. I’m not a nutter. He asked me to take off his head gear and I physically attacked him.

“It’s the worst thing that’s happened since I’ve been with him and I’ve been with him for ten years, I’m like a father to him.

“There’s no father around, he’s the man in his house so he finds it very hard to take instructions from another man. There is definitely a problem there.”

Charles went on to say that he regretted attacking Derek but that he would not tolerate being spoken to the way Chisora spoke to him. Charles is in the dark as to where he stands and does not know whether or not their relationship can be restored to the point where they can work together again.

The Haye – Chisora fight, which is scheduled to take place at Upton Park on July 14, has been beset by problems right from the outset. Promoter Frank Warren was forced to go to Luxembourg to receive the necessary sanctioning for the fight. The fight itself was born out of the insanity which followed the infamous brawl between Chisora and Haye following “Del-Boy’s” losing effort against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in February.

Predictably ticket sales have been brisk for the fight. Everyone loves a good grudge match. Getting sanctioned, finding a venue and putting together a good undercard has been far more difficult.

David Haye, for his part wants to put in an impressive showing against Chisora. Haye is still hoping to land a big money title shot against Vitali Klitschko. Vitali is playing his cards close to his vest and has not said for sure whether or not his next fight will be his last. It is known that “Dr. Ironfist” would like to fight Haye before he retires. It just may be that Klitschko is playing a waiting game to see what happens when Haye and Chisora fight and may make his final decision after the match.
