Image: Maidana off 7/21 fight card against Thurman; Is Maidana facing Canelo?By Dan Ambrose: Yahoo Sports News writer Kevin Iole is reporting that WBA World light welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (31-3, 28 KO’s) is off the July 21st undercard of the Adrien Broner vs. Vincente Escobedo fight at the U.S Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio. Maidana was scheduled to face the big punching unbeaten welterweight Keith Thurman in a 10 round bout.

Iole isn’t sure what the deal is, but he did say this: “I just retweeted a tweet from Maidana in which he was asked when he was fighting again. He said September 15 vs. Canelo Alvarez.”

A fight between Maidana and Canelo Alvarez would seem like a predictable one, as they’re both promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and they don’t have a lot of other options unless they want to put Alvarez in with Erislandy Lara. It doesn’t look like they want to do that. Maidana is a safe fight for Alvarez, because he’ll make it entertaining but he won’t have the size needed to upend Golden Boy’s young star.

They have to carefully match Alvarez, because if they match him up against someone really good at this early stage in his career, he’ll likely get exposed. Even in his last fight against 40-year-old Shane Mosley, Alvarez looked flustered and bothered by Mosley’s pressure. I’d hate to see what a bigger, stronger, faster fighter with power like Lara would do to Alvarez.

It wouldn’t be pretty. As such, Maidana is the safe choice for Alvarez if he ends up getting selected.

Maidana would be moving up two entire divisions to fight the 154 pound Alvarez. We just saw how Maidana didn’t even have the size to beat welterweight Devon Alexander last February in a one-sided 10 round decision loss. So now he’s going to move up another division. This won’t even be a fair fight unless Alvarez meets Maidana at a catchweight or preferably 147.
