Khan vs. Garcia: What will Amir’s excuse be if he loses?

Image: Khan vs. Garcia: What will Amir's excuse be if he loses?By William Mackay: We heard the excuses that Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) used for his last defeat at the hands of Lamont Peterson last December. Before it was revealed that Peterson tested positive for synthetic testosterone well after their December fight in Washington, DC, Khan blamed his loss on the judges, referee and mystery man.

Then when Peterson tested positive for testosterone while getting ready for a rematch with Khan, we then saw Khan latch on to another excuse for his loss to Peterson. My take on this is that Khan seems to be a fighter that can’t acknowledge that he’s got holes his game that badly need fixing. Instead of seeing his loss to Peterson as a problem with his game, Khan has been making excuses and that’s sad. The problem I see is with Khan’s poor stamina, his wasting energy throwing wild flurries, and running the ring with no rhyme or reason. If Khan conserved some of his energy by not running so much and throwing so many wild punches, he might have actually won.

On July 14th, we’re going to see Khan challenge WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (23-0, 14 KO’s) for the WBC and vacant WBA title at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The World Boxing Association has conveniently stripped Peterson of his WBA title, which gives Garcia cover to dodge his #1 mandatory challenger Ajose Olusegun, a fighter that would likely beat Garcia if and when he’s finally given the chance to fight him one of these days.

I’m trying to imagine what kind of excuses will be dreamed up by Khan if he loses to Garcia in this fight. Khan already used the mystery man, the steroid excuse and the blame on the judges and referee. What will Khan say? I hope Golden Boy Promotions, Khan’s promoters, don’t make a mess of the fight by filing an appeal and leading some kind of investigation if Khan loses. I just want the guy to give credit where credit is do when and if he loses the fight instead of failing to accept the reality of what happened.
