Image: Khan: I'm sure Mayweather is talking about fighting meBy William Mackay: Despite the fact that Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) is coming off a defeat last December in a fight where he seemed to crumble mentally from the pressure that was put on him by Lamont Peterson, Khan thinks that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is interested in fighting him for some reason.

It’s unclear why Khan feels this way, because Mayweather Jr. already said he didn’t like Khan’s running against Peterson and felt he should have been disqualified. Mayweather Jr. didn’t say why he felt Khan should have been disqualified but it’s likely due to Khan’s shoving and pulling down on the head of Peterson all night long.

Khan said to eastsideboxing.com’s On the Ropes Boxing Radio program “I’m sure Mayweather is already talking about fighting me. So, yeah, definitely, it’s about timing in this game and Mayweather has shown in his last fight that he’s getting caught more; his feet have slowed down a lot; his defense is not like it used to be…his movement is not the same anymore.”

When mentions “Timing” in facing Mayweather, what Khan is referring to is that he’d be facing Mayweather Jr. when he’s starting to slip rather than being at the top of his game. In other words, getting him in a weakened point of his career. It’s not exactly how you want to go about picking fights and opponents, is it? It doesn’t matter, because I don’t think Mayweather is talking about fighting Khan, because the guy just got beat and he’ll likely get beat again in his next fight on July 14th against WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia. Mayweather isn’t a cherry picker and he’s not going to face Khan when he can’t even beat Lamont Peterson and Garcia. And this is Khan at the top of his game right now. This is as good as he’ll likely get, and yet he still can’t get past guys like Peteron and Breidis Prescott.

Instead of mentioning Mayweather’s name, Khan should be focusing on the Garcia fight because another loss for Khan and it’ll be hard to imagine seeing his fights still televised by HBO in the United States.
