Image: Josesito Lopez will have problems against guys like Matthysse and Maidana when he moves back down in weightBy Allan Fox: If Josesito Lopez (30-4, 18 KO’s) is wise, he’ll try hard to get a rematch against Victor Ortiz so that he can get the best payday possible while at the same time facing a guy that you could self implode if he suffers another injury or starts taking punishment. Ortiz is the best option for Lopez, because he’s a vulnerable fighter in a war-like bout that Lopez tends to favor.

Lopez will have problems when he moves back down in weight and faces the best fighters at light welterweight such as Marcos Maidana, Lucas Matthysse, Danny Garcia, Ajose Olusegun and Mike Alvarado. I think those are probably the best guys at 140 right now. Amir Khan is planning on moving up in weight after his next fight, so he’s not going to be in the equation.

Lopez won’t be able to get the better of guys like Alvarado, Maidana, Matthysse, Garcia and Olusegun by fighting in brief spurts the way he did last Saturday night against Ortiz. Those guys fight hard and don’t let up. Lopez will be over his head against any of them. He might possibly have enough to beat Maidana, but I wouldn’t count on it because Maidana would likely crowd him and batter him on the inside with head and body shots. Matthysse would wear Lopez down with body shots and take him out. Alvarado and Olusegun would bludgeon Lopez into submission with their big shots.

Lopez should focus entirely on the Ortiz fight because this could be as good as it gets for him. I see it going downhill from here once he moves back down to 140 and faces any of the aforementioned fighters.
