Garcia said to RingTV “In the 5th or 6th round, he [Ortiz] got a good shot to the chin. He told me that ‘I think I got a good shot in the chin, and he hurt me pretty good.’ He said that he thought his jaw was broken.”

Well there goes the idea that Ortiz suffered the injury in the 9th. It looks a lot better that Ortiz fought on with the injury for three rounds rather than suddenly suffering the injury in the 9th and immediately calling it quits after the round had ended.

Garcia says he convinced Ortiz to fight on for another three rounds to see if the condition would improve. It obviously worsened to the point where Ortiz could no longer take the pain of the jaw injury and decided to quit in the 9th.

Richard Schaefer, Ortiz’s promoter from Golden Boy Promotions, told RingTV that he wished that Ortiz’s corner had stopped it earlier in order not to risk Ortiz getting injured even more. Garcia said he saw his fighter in control of the fight and he instructed him to use his jab to box. That worked for a while until Lopez began to land a significant amount of shots in the 7th, 8th and 9th rounds that worsened Ortiz’s condition.
