Image: Garcia needs to fight Khan in closeBy William Mackay: WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia has the tools to beat Amir Khan on July 14th as long as he fights smart by not allowing Khan to run around he ring throwing his pitty-pat shots like he usually does in his fights.

Garcia doesn’t have the same hand speed or the ability to run around the ring all night long like Khan does. He does, however, have the better inside fighting ability and that’s something that he needs to take advantage of in this fight by pressuring Khan and keeping the action in close.

Khan really hasn’t improved much since he started training with Freddie Roach. Khan still fights in robotic manner, moving straight in and straight out. Khan still fades late in his fights, and can’t fight a lick on the inside.

Since being stopped by Breidis Prescott in 2008, Khan seems afraid to sit down on his shots for fear of getting hit with a hard counter from one of his opponents. As such, Khan runs around the ring, throwing weak flurries and then dashing off again. Khan mixes in a lot of shoving, pulling down on his opponent’s head and headlocks to keep them off balance. Khan finally ran out of luck in his last fight against Lamont Peterson when a referee finally said ‘no’ to Khan’s fouling and decided to do take some points off. Sadly, it didn’t change how Khan fought, as he continued to shove and pull down on Peterson’s head until the end of the fight.

Garcia cannot win this fight if he allows Khan to run around the ring landing shots and scurrying away without getting hit. Garcia has to get on top of Khan and force him to fight in close where Khan has no skills. This is the only way Garcia can, because he’s not going to be able to land his shots with Khan jumping around the ring all night.
