Did Pacquiao take his foot off the gas against Bradley?

Image: Did Pacquiao take his foot off the gas against Bradley?By John F. McKenna (McJack): Make no mistake about it, former World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38 KO’s) was deprived of his title by a horrendous decision when the new WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (29-0-1 NC, 12 KO’s) was given a gift victory to claim Manny’s title.

Bradley himself admitted to Top Rank CEO Bob Arum after the fight, but before the decision was announced that he tried but could not handle Pacquiao. Inexplicably “Desert Storm” has now had a lapse of memory and cannot recall saying what was obvious to everyone but the ringside judges.

After a review by WBO officials the boxing public was informed what it already knew. “Pacman” was the clear winner. The review on the part of the WBO was seen by many as an effort to do some much needed damage control in a sport that is already on life support and cannot afford any more scandals. Of course the WBO would not or could not reverse the injustice done Pacquiao.

While watching Manny totally outbox Bradley this writer was amazed once again at the ease with which Pacquiao dominated his opponent. After all, Bradley at 28 is a pretty good fighter and while not in Pacquiao’s class, he is undefeated and a champion in his own right.

This writer gave Pacquiao the first nine rounds as did HBO scorekeeper Harold Ledderman. The 10th round I gave to Bradley, not that he really did any damage with his ineffectual pity pat punches. It just seemed that “Pacman” had taken the round off. At that point Bradley had the look of a defeated fighter and Pacquiao sensing this seemed to coast, even at one point smiling for the benefit of those at ringside.

So, the question is, did Manny unwittingly do himself damage by easing up on the gas? He decided to ease up when he had the fight won against Margarito and seemed to do so against Mosley as well.

My scorecard read ten rounds to two in favor of Pacquiao. To suggest that “Pacman” might have won if he had not coasted in the final rounds is irrelevant. You can’t be any more dominant than Manny was and yet he still lost. The judges appeared to be of the mindset that Bradley was going to get the decision no matter what.

Perhaps Pacquiao learned a bitter lesson on June 9. A KO takes the decision out of the hands of the judges. That is why trainer Freddie Roach continually urges his star pupil to go for the KO.
