By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) recently lost his WBA junior middleweight title to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last month in an exciting fight on HBO that brought in huge pay-per-view numbers, and an equally huge payday for the 31-year-old Cotto.

Although he’d like to get a rematch against Mayweather Jr. to try and recapture his WBA title, Cotto may instead opt to move up to middleweight to try and capture a fourth division world title.

Cotto has already won world titles at light welterweight, welterweight and junior middleweight. He’s now eying the possibility of moving up six pounds in weight to face one of the following middleweight champions: Felix Sturm, Daniel Geale, Dmitry Pirog, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. or Sergio Martinez if he beats Chavez Jr. in their fight on September 15th.

Cotto told Elnuevodia.com “It’s [moving up to 160 lbs] is a very attractive offer for me…Yeah, it’s a motivation. Be the first Puerto Rican in the range of champions to win titles in four weight classes…I just do it for pride…We will agree and if they are willing to do a catch weight I have no problems.”

For it to be worthwhile, Cotto has got to look to fight either Sturm or the winner of the Chavez Jr-Martinez fight. Fighting Geale or Pirog isn’t something that will be really worth it for Cotto, because those fighters aren’t well known and there’s no real gain even if Cotto beats them other than winning a fourth world title.

The negative thing that Cotto has going for him is that none of those fighters will be available to fight anytime soon. Cotto says he wants to fight on December 1st in new York, but none of those fighters will be ready to face him. I guess if Martinez or Chavez Jr. badly want the fight they’ll make a quick return to the ring to fight Cotto, but I doubt they’ll want to do it because their fight on September 15th will likely be bloody and bruising.
