Image: Chavez Jr-Martinez undercard likely to include Rigondeaux, Macklin & Mike AlvaradoBy Allan Fox: It looks like Top Rank president Bob Arum is going to load up the undercard of the September 15th pay-per-view card headlined by a match-up between WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KO’s) vs. Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KO’s) at the Thomas & Mack Center, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to Dan Rafael, the following fighters may be included with the PPV card: WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, middleweight contender Matthew Macklin and unbeaten light welterweight contender Mike Alvarado. Those are some good fighters, and it should be a great card if Arum includes those guys.

Rigondeaux, the unbeaten Cuban super bantamweight champion is perhaps the best of the bunch. He’s trying to build a name for himself and he needs some good quality opposition to make him a star. However, he’s not getting much help from the other top fighters such as Nonito Donaire, as he doesn’t want to fight him and getting the other top guys to fight him has been like pulling teeth. He’s perhaps the best fighter in the entire division, but it’ll be hard for him to ever prove that with the other top fighters unwilling to face him.

The Chavez Jr vs. Martinez PPV card will have a little competition on that night with WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fighting on another network in what could be a PPV fight. Even if it’s not a PPV bout, it’s going to drain away a certain amount of boxing fans who want to see him fight. One advantage that the Chavez Jr-Martinez card has is that Golden Boy Promotions doesn’t have a big name to put in with the young Alvarez to attract fans. If they put someone like Austin Trout or Carlos Quintana in with him, few boxing fans will be interested, and will likely choose to pay to see the Chavez Jr-Martinez fight instead.
