Image: Brook-Jones: Carson ready to take down Kell in front of his own fansBy Scott Gilfoid: I have to hand it to Kell Brook (27-0, 18 KO’s). He’s had a good run for the past eight years with pretty much exclusively soft opposition from the 2nd tier of the welterweight division. He’s made it this far and is still sporting an unbeaten record, albeit filled with mostly no names that can’t punch or take shots.

Next month, the 26-year-old Brook will be stepping it up for the first time in his career against talented American Carson Jones (34-8-2, 24 KO’s) at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, UK. This will be a home fight for Brook, but it won’t matter because Jones has a ton of experience in fighting in another fighters’ hometown, and this won’t be any different. It may be a little louder with all the screaming and singing from Brook’s fans, but it won’t last for long. The screaming and singing will go silent early on when Jones starts putting a whopping on Brook.

That’s the good thing about Jones. He knows how to shut the yaps up by pounding the hometown fighter. I think the cheering will turn into weeping when Jones really put it into overdrive and starts pounding Brook like no tomorrow.

Brooks’ fans look at Jones’ resume and immediately notice the losses. What they don’t understand is that those losses are like losses on WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido’s resume. They’re badges of honor that came earlier in Jones’ career when he learning how to fight and taking on guys that were still a level above him. It was by taking on constantly better opposition that Jones kept improving until he’s gotten to the point where he is today ready to get a title shot after he whips Brook next month. I wish I could say the same thing for Brook as far as his development goes.

He’s not continually taken on better, and better opposition. There has been a complete lack of progression, as he’s been trapped in a stultified made, neither going up or going down. For Brook, this is a HUGE step up in class in facing Jones and I don’t think he’ll be ready for it. The soft matchmaking has rusted what skills that Brook has to the point where he’ll be overmatched in this fight. Hopefully after he takes his beating he’ll continue to face quality opposition so that he can learn something for a change like Jones did.
