Image: Broner tests his physical gifts against EscobedoBy Scott Gilfoid: What may be the most talented fighter in boxing, WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (23-0, 19 KO’s), will be showing his tremendous physical gifts next month against #1 WBO Vicente Escobedo (26-3, 15 KO’s) on July 21st on HBO.

Broner, 22, is the future of boxing and will take over for an aging Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao as the fighter that will carry the sport for another 10 years.

Escobedo, a pretty basic fighter who has been an inflated ranking after wins over weak opposition, is really over his head in this fight against the talented Broner. The best that we can hope for here is that Escobedo will last long enough to give Broner some badly needed rounds so he can show his stuff.

Broner needs a punching bag like Escobedo to be able to stick around at least until the 10th round so that Broner can get something out of the fight. It’s not going to be competitive, let me make that clear right now. Escobedo doesn’t have the speed or the talent to compete with Broner. But I’m hoping that he’s at least good enough to give Broner 10 rounds before he’s ripped to pieces.

What Broner needs is to face some quality fighters so that he can learn things. The problem is there isn’t anyone good in the super featherweight nor the lightweight division that can really give him much of a test. The super featherweight division is barren of talent, and the lightweight division only has Antonio DeMarco and Miguel Vazquez, and neither of those guys are talented enough to give Broner any real teat.

Broner needs to face someone like Gary Russell Jr. That would be an ideal fight for Broner. He may have to move up to light welterweight for him to find some real talent that can test him.
