Spinks vs. Bundrage on Guerrero-Aydin undercard on July 28th

By Jim Dower: The fight fight between IBF light middleweight champion Cornelius Bundrage (31-4, 18 KO’s) and 34-year-old Cory Spinks (39-6, 11 KO’s) has been moved from June 23rd to July 28th on the Robert Guerrero vs. Selcuk Aydin fight card at the Shark Tank in San Jose, California.

Spinks, a former two division world champion, is ranked #1 by the IBF at 154 despite having lost three out of his last six fights. It’s kind of an odd ranking for someone who has had less than impressive performances in the ring recently. Spinks was stopped by Bundrage by a 5th round demolition two years ago in August 2010. In that fight the light Spinks was simply no match for the much harder hitting Bundrage and the fight was more like champion beating up on a punching bag. No matter what Spinks tried in the fight, Bundrage was able to easily counter it by coming back with much harder shots. Spinks tried running, but Bundrage was able to cut off the ring and continue bludgeoning him with shots.

After Spinks’ beating by Bundrage, he came back to beat little known Sharkir Shanti (16-10) by a 10 round unanimous decision in June 2011. In Spinks’ last fight, he defeated Sechew Powell by a narrow 12 round unanimous decision in an IBF light middleweight title eliminator last January. Spinks looked horrible, but good enough to beat Powell.

I think the Spinks-Bundrage rematch will go pretty much like the first fight with Bundrage having way too much power for Spinks and beating him from start to finish. Spinks was a good fighter for a period of years from 2002 to 2007, but he’s had mixed results since 2007, losing to Jermain Taylor, Verno Phillips and Bundrage. He did beat Deandre Latimore in April 2009.

Bundradge will chase Spinks down and beat him just as easy as he did last time. Spinks lacks power and Bundrage is much too big and strong for him. This is like Joe Frazier vs. George Foreman. Spinks’ won’t have the power to compete with Bundrage and it’s going to end badly for him.
