Image: Robert Guerrero likely won't get Mayweather bout if he beats Aydin on 7/28By Dan Ambrose: Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KO’s) will be fighting Selcuk Aydin (23-0, 17 KO’s) on July 28th for the interim WBC welterweight title at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. A win for the 29-year-old Guerrero should in theory put him in the position to where he could get a fight against the WBC 147 pound champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.

However, the chances of Guerrero getting that fight is remote at best. He doesn’t have the name, doesn’t have a big enough fan base, and he’s a southpaw. He’s got pretty much everything going against him in trying to get a Mayweather fight.

It doesn’t matter if Guerrero breezes through Aydin, he’ll still likely be ignored. The reason for that is Guerrero has been hidden away fighting at the lower weights that few Americans really care about, and he’s only now moving up in weight two entire divisions to face Aydin. It’s too little too late. Guerrero will likely have to find success for a prolonged period of time before he makes a name for himself at welterweight, if he ever does.

Mayweather will be long gone by the time Guerrero makes a mark on the division. He can become the interim WBC welterweight champion, but the casual fan still won’t know who he is or care. It takes big fights shown on HBO or Showtime for a fighter like Guerrero to become a star and I don’t think he can do it.

Guerrero has his work cut out for him as it is by moving up two divisions to take on the slugger Aydin. Guerrero may have the better boxing skills, but Aydin has the power. Guerrero looked poor at times against tiny Michael Katsidis in his last fight in April of last year.

Now picture Guerrero being put in with a stronger and bigger version of Katsidis in Aydin. I see it as a long night for Guerrero. He may win but he’s going to get beat up something awful along the way, and he won’t impress Mayweather.
