Mosley will get a lot of visibility for this fight, because it’s a pay-per-view bout and is taking place on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Miguel Cotto.

If Mosley wins this fight, he’ll not only be the new World Boxing Council 154 pound title, but he’ll guarantee himself a nice paying rematch against the 21-year-old Alvarez should that be the direction that he wants to take.

It seems the most logical choice for Mosley because there’s no real money in him facing guys like Erislandy Lara, Vanes Martirosyan and James Kirkland yet. Besides, he’d just lose to all them and have nothing to show for it.

Mosley has looked like a faded fighter for the past couple of years since his bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May of 2010 followed by a fight against Sergio Mora in September of 2010 where Mosley looked equally bad in getting a questionable 12 round draw. Then in his next fight, Mosley was again easily beaten this time by Manny Pacquiao last year in May. And that’s it. Mosley hasn’t fought since then and it’s not hard to imagine that Mosley is over-the-hill and not capable of fighting at high enough level to get past a guy like Alvarez.

Alvarez is a good fighter, but limited and he’s being pretty well protected by his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions. He’s one of those fighters that is more popular than he is talented. I think Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fits into that category, and Alvarez is maybe a little bitter than him but still someone that may never be a really great fighter no matter how long Golden Boy waits to finally put him in tough against someone good.
