Image: Mayweather’s best options for his next fight – Saul Alvarez or Cotto rematchBy Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. has to look for the biggest name he can find in his next fight later on this year. Mayweather made big bank in his win over WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto earlier this month, and it’s not likely that Mayweather will want to see himself take a pay cut to face some of the up and coming fighters in the division that still haven’t reached super stardom like Mayweather.

For this reason I’ve narrowed down the options for Mayweather’s next fight to two fighters: Saul Alvarez or Miguel Cotto. I would add Manny Pacquiao to the list, but we all know that he and his promoter Bob Arum are insisting on getting a 50-50 deal with Mayweather and that’s not going to happen unless Pacquiao starts making the same or bigger money in his fights on pay-per-view. Don’t hold your breath waiting for that to happen because it won’t. Mayweather will likely continue to be boxing’s cash cow and number #1 moneymaker.

Saul Alvarez is an ideal opponent for Mayweather because Alvarez still hasn’t been beaten and he’s got a lot of Mexican fans that will no doubt be interested in purchasing a fight between him and Mayweather on PPV. Alvarez is a major celebrity in Mexico and he’s quickly becoming a star in the U.S. If Alvarez can shine in his next fight against Paul Williams on September 15th, then a fight between Mayweather and Alvarez will be even bigger.

Miguel Cotto should be Mayweather’s pick for his next fight, because he’s the number #3 PPV star in the sport behind Mayweather and Pacquiao. That’s reason enough right there for Mayweather to fight Cotto again. But more importantly, Mayweather still needs to fight Cotto again to show that he’s a much better fighter than he appeared to be against Cotto on May 5th.

Mayweather admitted that he only fought toe-to-toe against Cotto to make the fight exciting for the boxing fans that paid to see him fight. If he wanted to box Cotto, he would have shut him out. Mayweather needs to do that to hsow boxing fans that the fight wouldn’t have been competitive if Mayweather hadn’t given Cotto a crutch by fighting his fight.
