Mayweather’s $40 million offer to Pacquiao doesn’t seem like a bad thing now

Image: Mayweather's $40 million offer to Pacquiao doesn't seem like a bad thing nowBy Chris Williams: There was a lot of static given to Floyd Mayweather Jr. after his $40 million offer made to Manny Pacquiao for a mega fight not too long ago before Mayweather’s recent win over WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto. Pacquiao saw it as a bad offer, as did his promoter Bob Arum.

However, with the HUGE pay-per-view numbers that Mayweather just brought in for the Cotto fight, which were the second biggest PPV numbers for a non-heavyweight title fight, it clearly shows how much of a big money maker Mayweather.

There’s no question that he’s boxing’s cash cow without a doubt, and that $40 million offer he made to Pacquiao is now looking like an accurate one. If anything, I can see the next offer being less than $40 million for the Filipino star because it’s pretty much academic at this point that Mayweather’s star appeal and money-making ability is second to none in the sport.

For a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao, $40 million is a damn good offer as far as I’m concerned. We’re talking $40 million out of an estimated $100 million pot of gold for the two fighters. That sounds about right to me. Pacquiao deserves about $40 million or maybe he used to deserve that.

If Pacquiao’s biggest payday of his career was $25 million, he’ll be getting $15 million more if he accepts the $40 million from Mayweather. That seems more than fair to me, especially with Pacquiao getting the smaller numbers. You can’t expect Mayweather to take a pay cut by accepting the ridiculous 45-45-10 deal made by Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum.

That would be giving Pacquiao money he doesn’t deserve. He’s got to earn a 45% deal by coming up with some huge numbers in his next fight against Tim Bradley on June 9th, and you know and I know that fight will be damn lucky if it can even break 1 million buys.
