Image: Mayweather: Bob Arum is stopping the Pacquiao fightBy Chris Williams: Newly crowned WBA Super World junior middleweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) put in a masterful performance on Saturday in defeating 31-year-old Miguel Cotto by a 12 round unanimous decision at them MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The final judges scores were 117-111, 117-111, 118-110.

Cotto basically had nothing left after the 8th round, and was swept in the last four rounds by Mayweather. It was just as figured it would be. Cotto is basically a 6 to 8 round fighter, and after he gasses out enough to where his opponents can come back on him to dominate. Mayweather didn’t need to come back, however, because he was in the lead the entire fight.

After the fight HBO analyst Larry Merchant asked Mayweather if he’ll fight Manny Pacquiao next, and Mayweather said “The fight didn’t happen because of Bob Arum. Bob Arum is in the way. He’s stopping the Pacquiao fight. Let’s give the fans what they want to seem – me and Pacquiao. I can’t say who’s on my radar…Like I’ve said before, I’ve been trying to make the Pacquiao fight. Miguel didn’t have a problem taking the blood and urine test [to test for performance enhancing drugs], so why should he? [Pacquiao] If you’re the best take the test. Let’s give the fans what they want to see – Mayweather-Pacquiao.”

It’s too bad we’re probably not going to be seeing the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. Between the drug testing issues and the disagreements about the purse split, the fight won’t likely ever happen. Pacquiao wants a 50-50 deal, but recently he won a controversial 12 round decision over Juan Manuel Marquez, a fighter that Mayweather easily beat. Floyd doesn’t see Pacquiao as his equal in ability, and after the pay-per-view numbers are announced for the Mayweather-Cotto fight, it’ll likely make it even tougher for Mayweather and Pacquiao to agree to a fight because Mayweather’s PPV numbers will likely be very high. I can see them going over 1.6 million buys. Additionally, Pacquiao fights Tim Bradley next month on June 9th, and Pacquiao could lose that fight or look awful in winning another questionable decision. If either of those things happen, then it’s going to mess up the chances of a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight from taking place. Also, if the Pacquiao-Bradley PPV numbers pale in comparison to the Mayweather-Cotto PPV numbers, then that will also get in the way of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight from taking place unless Pacquiao comes down from his asking price of 50-50 and agrees to the 60-40 deal that Mayweather wants.
