Image: Kessler needs to get in line behind Ward for Bute-Froch winnerBy Scott Gilfoid: WBC Silver light heavyweight champion Mikkel Kessler’s promoter wants him to face the winner of the May 26th fight between IBF champ Lucian Bute and Carl Froch after Kessler got up off the canvas to defeat Allan Green last Saturday night. But Kessler needs to wait in line behind WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward, who is already waiting for the Bute vs. Froch winner.

It would be wrong for Kessler to get the title shot against the Bute-Froch winner because Kessler hasn’t fought a live body since April 2010. We’re talking over two solid years since Kessler fought a halfway decent opponent in Froch. He didn’t fight for the rest of 2010 after beating Froch in April 2010, and then Kessler fought only once in 2011, defeating a fighter named Mehdi Boudla. That was Kessler’s last fight before last night’s fight. He’s not fighting quality guys anymore, and he shouldn’t be given a title shot against the Bute-Froch winner off of just the win over fringe light heavyweight contender Allan Green.

Kessler needs to decide whether he wants to fight at 168 or 175, and then stick with that decision. If he wants to fight at light heavyweight then he needs to fight Chad Dawson. I wish him all the luck against Dawson, because after seeing Kessler dropped last night by Green, Kessler will need all the luck he can get to defeat a quality fighter like Dawson.

I don’t see Kessler beating any of the light heavyweight champions and I don’t see beating any of the super middleweight champions either for that matter. But he needs to work his way back into a title shot if he wants to fight for one of the straps at 168. He should have taken the fight against WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz when he had it instead of moving up in weight to the light heavyweight division. Kessler blew it. Now he needs to wait his turn.
