Image: Devon Alexander or Erik Morales possibilities for Amir Khan on July 7thBy William Mackay: Amir Khan’s promoter Richard Schaefer reportedly is having problems putting together a fight between Khan and WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia for July 7th at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. As such, Schaefer is now turning his attention to 35-year-old Erik Morales and Devon Alexander (23-1, 13 KO’s) for Khan to face.

Although the Morales would be the much better option for Khan, because Morales is slow and pretty played out, it’s a long shot because Morales is being eyed by Juan Manuel Marquez for a big money fight on July 14th at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. It’s going to be next to impossible to get Morales to turn his back on that fight, which will have the WBO light welterweight interim title on the line, to face the title-less Khan and serve as a stepping stone for him.

Khan will likely have to settle for Alexander, and there’s a real danger there for Khan because Alexander looks a lot stronger now that he’s moved up to 147 and is no longer having to take off weight in order to make 140 for light welterweight. Alexander recently easily beat Marcos Maidana by a lopsided 10 round unanimous decision last February.

Khan is coming off a loss to Lamont Peterson from last December, and he was supposed to be fighting a rematch against Peterson but the fight fell apart after Peterson’s positive drug test for synthetic testosterone. There’s no way they can fight now, which is why Schaefer has been trying to set up a fight against Garcia. However, Garcia has a mandatory defense due for his WBC mandatory challenger Ajose Olusequn, and that seems like an easier option than having to deal with Khan running around the ring all night long.

I can’t see Khan facing Alexander because he’s looking good right now and would present perhaps too stiff a test for Khan. Golden Boy Promotions wants to match Khan up against Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year, and if they put Khan in with Alexander, they could see that fight disappear with a loss for Khan.
